Iñaki Askunze (Spain)

Musician, conductor, arranger, composer.

Iñaki has studied “Saxophone” at San Sebastián Conservatory with “Honor´s Award” and at Berklee College of Music (Boston). He took classes from Joe Viola & Herb Pomeroy. He graduated “Magna Cum Laude Diploma” in “Performance” & “Jazz Composition“.
He has taught Saxophone at “Joaquín Maya” Conservatory (Pamplona) and “Harmony and arranging in Barcelona at “Taller de Musics”

He directed the “Iruña Big Band” for 10 years and the “Pirineos Jazz Orquestra” for 10 years. He recorded a Cd with Randy Brecker as special guest. They recorded a jazz-flamenco project too with Chano Domínguez as special guest.

Today Iñaki teaches harmony, arranging, composition and Big band, at the Jazz Department of the Basque Country´s Superior Conservatory (“Musikene”) and Navarra Superior Conservatory (CSMN).

He played in Jazz Festivals in Madrid, Barcelona, San Sebastián, Vitoria (with Manhattan Transfer). He has been invited to direct his Jazz flamenco Big Band arrangements and compositions with Federico García Lorca´s lyrics by “Royal Academy of Music” in Aarhus (Denmark), “Norwegian Academy of Music” in Oslo (Norway), “Maastricht Academy of Music” (Holland),  “Prince Claus Conservatoire” in Groningen (Holland), "Metropolia University" in Helsinki (Finland), “Saint Louis College of Music” in Rome (Italy).

He has been awarded in 2014 and 2016 with the 2nd prize at the "Competition for composition and arrangement for Big Band” organized by the Ool-Ya-Koo Cultural Association and SGAE Foundation in Granada.
