5 Best Puerto Rico Jazz Albums 2023: Carlos Henriquez – A Nuyorican Tale

Carlos Henríquez – A Nuyorican Tale

Puerto Rican bassist of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Carlos Henríquez share with us his experiences as a Puerto Rican born and raised in New York in his most recent recording “A Nuyorican Tale.”

Carlos is accompanied by a group of excellent musicians: Jeremy Bosch on flute and voice, Michael Rodríguez, and Terrell Stafford on trumpets, Marshall Gilkes on trombone, Melissa Aldana on tenor saxophone, Robert Rodríguez on piano and Fender Rhodes, Obed Calvaire on drums and Anthony Almonte on congas and vocals.

In “A Nuyorican Tale”, Henríquez once again demonstrates his mastery of the language of jazz and Afro-Caribbean music in songs that revisit the history of New York such as “Robert’s Red Line”, and others about memories and love for the homeland Puerto Rico such as “ Bodegas Groove” and “Mi Isla Bonita”. North American jazz and Afro-Cuban music meet in the tribute to Thelonious Monk “Afro-Monk”. An intimate work and at the same time a tribute to his roots and his ancestors.
